What ADA-compliant parking requires
Under the federal 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, a lot must provide a minimum number of accessible spaces based on its total size, and those spaces must be on the shortest accessible route to the building entrance. A standard accessible space is at least 96 inches wide and sits beside an access aisle at least 60 inches wide. At least one in every six accessible spaces must be van accessible, and spaces and aisles must be level, with slopes no steeper than 1:48 in any direction. State and local codes can add to these federal rules, so we work from your local requirements as well.
Stall markings, access aisles, and symbols
Striping is the most visible part of ADA compliance. We paint accessible stalls, hatched access aisles that keep the space beside each stall clear for ramps and lifts, and the International Symbol of Accessibility, using durable material that holds its color and edges under constant traffic.
Signs, ramps, and accessible routes
Each accessible space needs a sign showing the International Symbol of Accessibility, mounted high enough to stay visible when a vehicle is parked in the space. We install ADA-compliant signs and ramps and lay out stalls so they connect directly to building entrances.
Fixing violations and preparing for inspection
If your lot has received a complaint, failed an inspection, or simply has not been reviewed in years, we evaluate the existing layout, identify what needs to change, and correct it. Fixing accessible parking proactively is usually far less costly than responding to a violation.
Frequently asked questions
Does my parking lot need ADA accessible spaces?
Most commercial and public parking lots that serve customers, employees, or visitors are required to provide accessible spaces. The number depends on the total number of spaces. We can review your lot and tell you where it stands.
How many ADA spaces does a lot need?
The minimum rises with lot size, from a single accessible space in a small lot to more in larger ones, and at least one in every six accessible spaces must be van accessible. We count your spaces and lay out the correct number.
Do you install ADA signs and ramps as well as striping?
Yes. We stripe accessible spaces, install ramps, and place ADA-compliant signs so the whole accessible space is complete.
Can you fix an ADA violation or complaint?
Yes. We evaluate the existing layout, correct what does not meet requirements, and inspect the finished work to verify compliance.
How long does ADA striping take?
Most ADA striping projects are finished in a day or two once the layout is approved, and we can work at night or on weekends.
